The Manchester diesel problem is not an absence of long journeys. It is that the long journeys keep getting interrupted. A car will happily begin a regeneration on the M60 or the M56, then the traffic stops, or you reach your exit, and the cycle is abandoned part way through. Repeat that and the filter never fully clears, and on a lot of engines the extra fuel used to raise the exhaust temperature ends up diluting the engine oil. A rising oil level on a car that does stop start motorway miles is worth taking seriously.

Where to start

If the DPF light is on and the car does motorway miles in traffic, read the DPF page and check your oil level before you do anything else. On a very high mileage vehicle that is simply down on power with no light showing, diagnostics will usually find it in live data before a code appears. On private hire and delivery vehicles, AdBlue faults arrive early because the components are wear items and the mileage is enormous.
