AdBlue faults tend to turn urgent fast, because the vehicle starts counting down the miles until it will not restart. On a working pickup in the middle of Denbighshire that is a real problem, so it is worth dealing with as soon as the warning appears.
AdBlue freezes at around minus eleven degrees. Vehicles are built to cope with that, with a heated tank and heated lines, but the heater circuit is itself a thing that fails. Diesels with AdBlue use a urea based fluid dosed into the exhaust to cut NOx, and faults come from several places: the fluid level or its quality, the level and quality sensors, the dosing injector, the NOx sensors, the pump, or the heater circuit that stops the fluid freezing in winter. Those look nearly identical from the driving seat and are not remotely the same job underneath. We diagnose with dealer level equipment first and tell you honestly what the options are.
Rangers, Hiluxes, L200s, Amaroks and the bigger 4x4s are common across this county because the work needs them, and most of the modern ones run SCR and AdBlue. A vehicle that spends its life on farm tracks and hill roads gives the system a harder time than a road car does, and dust, vibration and cold all play a part. Possibly contamination. AdBlue is sensitive to what it picks up and to how long it has been stored, and a part used container in a shed over a winter is a common source. The quality sensor may well be doing its job correctly. Reading the system tells us.
It appears when the system detects a fault or a low fluid level, and it tells you how many miles remain before the vehicle will refuse to restart. It is a legal emissions requirement rather than the manufacturer being awkward. Deal with it while the number is still large.
