Whether a DPF light in Chester is a driving problem or a mechanical one depends almost entirely on which kind of Chester driving you do. It is the first thing worth establishing, because the two lead to completely different answers.
A particulate filter needs a sustained run at temperature to clear itself. The A55, the M53 and the M56 provide exactly that, so a car doing a real commute usually has no trouble. The other Chester, though, is the inner ring road at half past eight, the crawl round to a park and ride, the two miles to a school and back, and short hops out to the retail parks. DPF warning lights, EGR faults and related emissions problems are common on modern diesels, and the same light comes from several very different causes. Before recommending any fix we carry out a full diagnostic check with dealer level equipment to understand exactly what the vehicle is reporting, including sensor readings and regeneration history. From there we tell you what is actually appropriate for your vehicle. We will not suggest work that is not right for it, and we will tell you when the answer is that nothing needs doing yet.
The cheapest thing you can try lives on your doorstep. A steady run west on the A55 or north on the M53, at a constant speed for long enough to get everything properly hot, often lets a car finish a regeneration it has been starting and abandoning for weeks. If the light clears and stays off, the filter was loading rather than failing and you have saved yourself a bill. If it comes straight back, something else is wrong and it is worth reading. We would rather tell you to try that first than not mention it.

Try a sustained run first, for example west on the A55 or north on the M53, at a steady speed for long enough for everything to get hot. Short city journeys stop a regeneration finishing. If the light clears and returns quickly, it is worth reading the system properly.
It points away from the driving being the cause, which is useful. On a car that gets regular long runs it is more likely to be a sensor, a fault upstream making excess soot, or a regeneration the car keeps abandoning for a reason it has stored.
Usually, as long as there is somewhere we can work safely and the car is accessible. Parking is the limiting factor in parts of the city rather than anything technical, so tell us the street when you get in touch.
A loaded or failing filter, a differential pressure or temperature sensor reading wrongly, regenerations that keep being interrupted, or a fault upstream such as an EGR problem producing more soot than the filter was designed to see. They present identically on the dash, which is why we diagnose before recommending anything.
