The tunnel commute is the thing that shapes it

A large share of Wirral driving is short, cold and interrupted: a few miles to a tunnel, a queue at each end, then the same again coming home. For a diesel that is close to a worst case, because a particulate filter needs a sustained run at temperature and this pattern never provides one. It also means the engine spends much of its life below the temperature it was designed around, which brings SCR and AdBlue problems forward too. Salt air on the coastal side adds its own thing, mostly corroded connectors and earths that produce faults which look like failed sensors.

Where to start

If you commute through the tunnel in a diesel and a DPF light has appeared, read the DPF page first, because the first thing to try costs nothing. If a sensor has been replaced and the fault came back, that is a diagnostics job and often a wiring problem rather than the part. If the car is healthy and you want it easier to drive in traffic, Stage 1 does its useful work exactly where peninsula driving lives.
