If you commute through the tunnel in a diesel and a DPF light has appeared, there is a good chance your journey is the cause. It is one of the clearest patterns we see anywhere we cover, and the good news is that it is often the cheapest sort to deal with.
A particulate filter clears itself by getting hot enough for long enough to burn off what it has collected. The Birkenhead or Wallasey run into Liverpool is the opposite of that in almost every respect. It is a handful of miles, so the engine has barely finished warming up. There is queueing at each end, so the car spends much of it barely moving. And it happens twice a day, five days a week, which means a regeneration gets started and abandoned over and over. Do that for a couple of years and the filter loads up regardless of how well the car has been looked after.

DPF warning lights, EGR faults and related emissions problems are common on modern diesels, and the same light comes from several very different causes. Before recommending any fix we carry out a full diagnostic check with dealer level equipment to understand exactly what the vehicle is reporting, including sensor readings and regeneration history. From there we tell you what is actually appropriate for your vehicle. We will not suggest work that is not right for it, and we will tell you when the answer is that nothing needs doing yet.
Before anyone spends anything, take the car down the M53 and give it a sustained run at a steady speed, far enough that everything gets properly hot. That is often all a partially loaded filter needs to complete the regeneration it has been trying to do in three mile bursts. If the light clears and stays off, that was the whole problem and you have paid nothing. If it comes back within a week, the filter or a sensor needs looking at properly and we can do that at your house. Either way you know more than you did.

Very likely. A short commute with queueing at both ends rarely gets the exhaust hot enough for long enough to complete a regeneration, and repeating that daily is how filters load up. Try a sustained run on the M53 first before assuming anything is broken.
If the filter is loaded rather than failed, often yes, and it costs nothing to find out. It needs to be a proper sustained run at a steady speed rather than a quick blast. If the light returns quickly afterwards, the problem is not just soot and it is worth reading the system.

A loaded or failing filter, a differential pressure or temperature sensor reading wrongly, regenerations that keep being interrupted, or a fault upstream such as an EGR problem producing more soot than the filter was designed to see.
